Hemp bedding is produced from the stem of the hemp plant which is dried and mulched to produce a bedding/substrate suitable for guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, tortoises, chinchillas and other small pets.

So, why is it so great?

  • Absorbancy - hemp bedding is capable of absorbing 4x its weight in water, wood shavings in comparison can absorb about 2.5x their weight. This means easier cleaning and less unpleasant smells!
  • Dust free and odorless - hemp bedding produces significantly less dust particles than wood shavings, and unlike pine doesn't contain any phenols (which can be toxic to small animals), making it the healthier choice for both you and your pets, particularly if they are kept indoors.
  • Texture - perfect for guinea pigs and rabbits (see the close-up photos), and much easier to sweep up off carpet than wood shavings.
  • Sustainable - a hemp crop doesn't require any pesticides to grow and can product 4x as much biomass per acre than a pine plantation. When it comes to disposing of your dirty pet bedding, hemp will compost in months compared to pine shavings which can take years to break down.
